For scenic parks, fun boating excursions and adventurous recreation, you can’t beat a trip to Gloucester County. Founded in 1686, Gloucester County is noted as an outstanding area for parks, boating and other forms of recreation for the whole family. Gloucester County is host to numerous historical and cultural sites. The Red Bank Battlefield and Memorial in National Park, for one, is home to a decisive battle of the Revolutionary War and affords a scenic view of the Delaware River. Gloucester County is also known for its wine tasting tours, breathtaking pink spring blossoms, and juicy award-winning peaches.

Gloucester County Parks

Parks in Gloucester County range from those with cultural or historical significance, such as the Red Bank Battlefield and Memorial in National Park, to parks reserved for boating and other recreational activities, like the Greenwich Lake Park. The 66-acre James G. Atkinson Memorial Park offers a variety of facilities, including playgrounds, a picnic pavilion, eight lighted tennis courts, two lighted basketball courts, a baseball/soccer/football field, a mile of jogging and biking trails, an exercise course, and the Millennium Plaza. Each summer, Gloucester County Parks and Recreation offers a free Summer Concert Series every Sunday in June, July and August. Park-lovers can also find a great park atmosphere at the historic Red Bank Battlefield on the Delaware River, where there is open park space, playgrounds, picnic pavilions, and tree-lined walkways along the river. And the largest of Gloucester County’s parks, the Scotland Run Park, offers 940 acres for fishing, boating, and nature observation year-round.

Gloucester County Boating

Beyond walking the numerous parks in Gloucester County, boating is a great way to become one with nature. Whether you’re a boating enthusiast who prefers the gentle glide of a canoe or kayak, or you’d rather speed along the river in a motorboat, you can find your style of boating in Gloucester County. Gloucester County is home to waterways offering boating in everything from mirror-like calm to wilder white water. The annual boat launch at Greenwich Lake Park takes place on weekends from the start of trout season to Memorial Day, and then daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day. When it’s time for a boating break, boaters at Greenwich Lake can relax and enjoy a playground, conversation area, picnic tables and grills.

In addition to parks and boating, Gloucester County offers lots of recreation for active, fun-loving visitors of all ages. For theater buffs, the Broadway Theater in Pitman, an 80-year old theater known for showing silent films, will soon be revitalized. There are also a number of museums, first run movie theaters, swimming pools, and tennis courts conveniently located in the Gloucester County area. But perhaps the most noteworthy recreational activities in Gloucester County are the Freefall Adventures Skydiving School, the most experienced skydiving school in the Northeast, and the Bridgeport Speedway, “the Fastest Dirt Track in the East.” Freefall Adventures Skydiving School has introduced more than 250,000 adventurous recreation lovers to the world of skydiving. And for those who prefer high speed recreation, racers at the spacious 5/8-mile high-banked dirt Bridgeport Speedway reach speeds of over 110 mph.
