BRIDGE PLAYERS THEATRE COMPANY OPENS 43RD SEASON WITH
AUGUST WILSON’S PULITZER PRIZE WINNING PLAY, FENCES
(Burlington) BRIDGE PLAYERS THEATRE COMPANY, the Burlington City-based community theatre group, begins its 43rd season with the Tony award and Pulitzer Prize winning play, Fences, by August Wilson. The show will be presented for three weekends beginning September 28 at the Broad Street United Methodist Church in Burlington.
Fences tells the story of Troy Maxson, a former star of the Negro baseball leagues who now works as a garbage man in 1957 Pittsburgh. Excluded as a black man from the major leagues during his prime, Troy’s bitterness takes its toll on his relationships with his wife and his son, who now wants his own chance to play ball. Fences initially premiered on Broadway in 1987 starring James Earl Jones and Mary Alice. It enjoyed a 2010 revival on Broadway with Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. Washington and Davis reprised their roles in the 2017 film version.
Called by the New York Daily News “A blockbuster and a major American play,” and “… a deeply moving, hugely satisfying evening of theater” by Backstage, Fences has won multiple awards including the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the 1987 Tony Award for Best Play, and the 2010 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play, as well as the 2010 Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk Awards for Best Revival of a Play.
Bridge Players’ production features a stellar cast led by Arthur Gregory Pugh of Englewood, Diane L. Parker of Laurence Harbor, Ian Thomas and Quincy Stallworth of Philadelphia, Antwan Timbers of Riverside, Darryl S. Thompson, Jr., of Burlington and Veronica James of Mooretown.
Gwen Ricks-Spencer, of Lumberton, and a member of the Bridge Players Board, directs. She is joined by Maureen Broadbent of Oaklyn and Pat Marotta of Burlington as stage and production managers, respectively.
Of the play, Ricks-Spencer says “The story, the characters and the situation are just rich and filled with every human emotion imaginable. August Wilson has created an iconic piece of theatre; I’m so excited that Bridge Players chose to present it, and that I have the opportunity to help bring it to life.”
Fences will be presented September 28, 29, October 5, 6, 12, 13 at 8:00 pm and September 30 and October 7 at 3:00 pm.
